Owl in Raku
This little ceramic owl has been fired using the traditional Japanese Raku technique. When it is removed from the kiln while glowing hot, it is placed in a container with combustible materials, usually sawdust in my case, where smoke and reduction transform the clay and glaze.
The white clay turns black from the tar-like smoke produced by the smouldering sawdust. The process creates unexpected colour variations, darkened surfaces, unique patterns and beautiful crackle effects in the glaze.
Painted by fire.
Every firing leaves its own mark, making each owl a unique work of art with a character all of its own.
Creator Story
My name is Anna Beckman, and I have been creating ceramics for 26 years. Stoneware is the medium I work with most. I create a lot of functional pottery, but I also do quite a bit of sculpting. I love the unpredictable nature of the creative process and enjoy experimenting...
