The masked man.
This is an expressionist portrait painted in oil with a palette knife and dry pastel. The eyes are made with dry pastel, heated with a heat gun and smudged by hand. They don't fit in with the rest of the face, which is painted using a rough palette-knife technique. To me, the work suggests a person wearing a mask.
It is a person who goes to work, gets groceries, does the laundry, drinks beer on weekends and appears to do well—yet let his thoughts wander far away. So far and intense that the person is no longer present in their own body, which has turned into a shell. The soul within still lives and observes but not in the present.
