I painted this as a raw, cold early-spring morning, when everything is quiet but the air still has a sharp edge to it. The field carries a kind of strength beneath the pale light, as if the ground is gathering itself before moving on. The stillness is what I long for in this painting, that brief feeling of being able to breathe before the day begins.
