About Komito Ceramics

Hanni Schermaul is a ceramicist living in Berlin. She creates everyday objects, wall sculptures, clay collages, and interior and art objects under the name Komito Ceramics.

Her work focuses on stoneware and explores the material possibilities of different types of clay, with a particular emphasis on colored clay. Her objects are primarily constructed from slabs composed of various stoneware clays, which are layered and then sculpted into their final form. She uses techniques such as Nerikomi, inlays, slab building, and pinching, allowing structure, surface, and color to emerge together in the process. Each object is handmade and one of a kind.

Komito Ceramics is inspired by collage – both as a visual reference and a working method – by post-war abstract painting and by natural formations. In particular, geological strata serve as an ongoing point of reference, influencing the layered compositions and material contrasts that characterize her work.
