SELLING YOUR OWN CERAMICS

A Guide for Ceramic Artists

Selling ceramics you've shaped by hand can feel both exciting and intimidating. You might be asking yourself: Is my work good enough? How do I price it? Where do I even start?

This guide is for anyone who creates with clay and heart, and who’s ready to share that passion with others.

We know how much time, patience, and love goes into every hand-thrown mug or sculpture. And we also know this: there are people out there looking for exactly what you create.

WHO IS THIS GUIDE FOR?

It’s for you if:

You love to throw, hand-build, or sculpt clay, as a hobby or full-time passion

Friends have started asking if they can buy your work

You’ve sold a few pieces (maybe at a market or via DMs) and want to take it further

You’re dreaming of building something that’s your own, on your terms

You don’t need to have a registered business yet. You just need to want to share what you create with others.

CAN YOU ACTUALLY SELL YOUR OWN CERAMICS?

Yes! As long as the items are made by you (not bought and resold), you absolutely can sell them. You can start as a private individual, but if you begin selling regularly or in larger volumes, it’s worth registering as a company.

HOW SHOULD I PRICE MY WORK?

This is a tricky one for many creatives. But here’s the truth: you deserve to get paid for your time, materials, and artistry.

Tip: Look at similar handmade ceramic products. Factor in your clay, glaze, tools, time, and firing. It’s better to price slightly higher than too low, it signals value and respect for your craft.

FAQs

Do I need a registered business to sell ceramics?

No, you can start as a private individual. If you begin selling regularly or at higher volumes, it’s time to register. We’re happy to guide you through the steps.

What if no one buys my work?

Give it time. Your unique style will find its audience, but it may take a little trial and error. Try different photos, adjust your product descriptions or prices, and swap pieces to see what connects.

How can I make my ceramics more sellable?

Good photos make a huge difference. Also describe the material, size, and feel. This is where the “selling” comes in, add that extra love to how you present each piece.

What does it cost to sell on Cay?

It’s free to create an account. We take a 25% commission (ex. VAT) on sold items, and we support you throughout the journey.

Do I need to be VAT-registered?

Not at first. But if you sell above Sweden’s VAT threshold, it’s something to consider. We’re happy to help you figure it out.
