Slussen 2024 Original

This is an original piece I painted in 2024 using recycled canvas material, house paint and some acrylic paint.

First iteration was painted plein air on a smaller canvas panel using oil (not pictured).

It had a looser and more traditional feel.

In this studio rendition, I scaled the plein air painting, simplified the lines and colors. It turned out somewhat cubist-looking with a psychedelic twist. This was both intentional and intuitive, because I admire the work of Cezanne and M.C. Escher. Traditional landscape painters inspire me and here I have applied their techniques to an urban environment with modern, recycled materials.

The piece is unframed because I wanted to keep the roughness feel. When I painted it I cut the canvas and nailed it to the wall. Rocknroll. There is a lot of building material around Slussen, it is dirty, rough and chaotic. Many discarded materials could be re-purposed for art, I have done that to some extent with this piece. I think about this often when I walk by Slussen.
