When it is removed from the kiln while glowing hot, it is placed in a container with combustible materials, usually sawdust in my case, where smoke and reduction transform the clay and glaze.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe white clay turns black from the tar-like smoke produced by the smouldering sawdust.
